A client recently sent me an article citing the dangers of consuming fish oils.
As many who follow me know, I recommend fish oils because they are the broken down version of Omega 3 which is highly absorbable. The Omega 3 has been converted into EPA and DHA which the liver uses easily. Clients notice a difference within days. Their brains are finally firing on all cylinders. They feel connected and motivated.
Those who take omega 3 in the alpha linolenic acid form such as linseed oil don’t get the same results due to the liver having to convert the oil to DHA/EPA and that conversion is harder for modern fatty hard working livers.
Fish oils are polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) which are damaged by heat and exposure.
So they oxidise quickly.
Omega 3 and 6 need to be consumed raw.
Ideally just like the Japanese, we should be able to get our source of Omega 3 from food but that is not easy due to modern pollution. The Japanese have traditionally consumed raw fish rich in EPA and DHA which helps to feed the brain and help the neurotransmitters connect. The result is that autism rates are very low. But due to polluted seas, more parasites now exist which eat up the pollution. So unless it is organic its not something I recommend.
Raw milk contains small amounts of omega 3 but again many are lactose intolerant. This is a good source to add to your quota and if you are sensitive like me then souring the milk makes it more bioavailable and thus more digestible.
Meat also contains omega 3 if the animal has been grass fed but again the omegas must be consumed raw. So unless you are having steak tartare a few times a week I don’t recommend you rely on just meat.
Algae’s are not high enough in DHA and many do not contain EPA.
I have recommend fish oils for so long now that the testimonials I get are off the scale. They work wonders. They help women sail through the menopause They are natures Prozac. But what brand is best?
It is also NEED NOT GREED. Human bodies cant thrive without them.
The smaller the fish, the less mercury they contain. So ones made with sardines and anchovy’s are great. ( Note that the canning process and cooking destroys the omega 3). If you buy with added lemon oil, a natural antioxidant and once opened, keep them in the fridge, they should be fine.
Even better is krill oil which is made from the crustaceans that whales eat. Krill is rich in astaxanthin, a super antioxidant which protects the oils from oxidation. But krill also contain choline, a B vitamin which helps to open up the cells to increase absorption. This is fine in the summer months but in the middle of winter it can create healing crises due to the increase of waste moving out of the cells in to the lymph.
So ideally take a good quality fish oil with added lemon in the winter months and then move onto krill after the spring equinox. If you live somewhere hot and or is sweating regularly them krill oil would be perfect all year round. Krill though expensive is more concentrated so you need less.
