How does one deal with a deep chronic picture such as osteoarthritis? Do you just throw calcium tablets into the system and hope for the best or do you treat the body holistically?
Calcium tablets which are recommended by medical doctors actually contain calcium carbonate, which is essentially chalk. This is not bioavailable (recognised by the cells) to the human body.
This is how I would treat a client struggling with the pain and discomfort related to this dis-ease.
The first step would be to put her on high doses of the most bio-available form of omega-3, deep sea fish oil (4000mg a day) which acts act as a natural anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. Plus liberal amounts of ginger which also helps with pain relief and also acts as a natural anti-inflammatory. I suggest ginger tea either by boiling fresh whole ginger or buying a herbal concoction plus adding powdered ginger to a stewed fruit compote daily.
Also invest in a Kelp and Nettle supplement from www.Nutrigold.co.uk (type in NPook for discount code). Nettles contain silica which helps to rebuild connective tissue ( 1-2 a day). Kelp works on the thyroid, which also has an effect on calcium absorption, plus its rich in minerals.
Also its important to start increasing water intake to 8 glasses a day. Nothing will be absorbed without enough water pushing nutrients into the cells…water and oils also help to lubricate and cushion the body/joints.
Women’s bodies dump toxins as cellulite or extra fat around our hips and thighs pre menopause. For men it is the arteries and prostate… but after the menopause with no root out via the menses anymore, liver dumping ( into the joints) and leeching of minerals is worsened so the need to alkalise and support the liver is paramount. Plus there is also no route out of toxicity anymore via the menstrual cycle and the liver that processes all our nutrients will struggle. The liver uses the menses to release excess minerals such as sodium, which we always have too much of, and toxins each month. So it is vital to work on strengthening liver health with a supporting diet.
The body will rob calcium from the bones to continually balance the internal ph so it important to focus on a diet that is rich in magnesium (Mg) and which is alkaline as well. Sugar-rich diets are highly acidic and leech out Mg which is needed to push calcium into the bones.
A raw green juice everyday is a vital requirement to help the body balance the ph.
Once hydrated with plenty of essential fats and water then Mg is the next step. 1-2 capsules of Mg citrate from www.cytoplan.co.uk (CYT1508-35-0 for discount code) a day will suffice. A naturopathic mantra is… to start small and slowly increase… otherwise the liver, which has to process all vitamins and minerals, will struggle.
Because hormones affect the absorption of calcium, when you hit the menopause women don’t have the oestrogen pathway helping in its absorption. So a diet that is rich in bioavailable calcium is the next step. Plain live organic yoghurt with berries every morning is vital for probiotics and bioavailable calcium. Many who are lactose intolerant, like me, find that soured milk in the form of yoghurt is easier to process. Small amounts of raw milk kefir as well would be really healing for the gut.
Mashed sardines with the bones will also support bone health providing Ca, Mg, phosphorus and hormone D.
The liver will dump toxins anywhere it can if the roots of elimination are not functioning optimally that’s why supporting bowel health is also vital. So many clients of mine suffer from sticky stools which is an indicator that food is not being broken down adequately. Work on this first with a raw high fat diet and the bowels will respond well.
There is also no separation between the mind and body. That’s why the Chinese 5 elements are so useful… each organ is connected to an emotion…liver is anger, part of the Wood element…Water is fear, etc. Hence becoming “stiff like wood” as we age if anger is not looked at and processed. Water is the carrier of every dissolved substance in the body. The carrier of calcium in to the bones… so the Water element will be out in an osteoporosis picture as well as internal structure…wood/liver/ anger.
Its fascinating when taking a case to see the connections.
