The Cholesterol Question
Contrary to popular belief cholesterol is not the big baddie that it is made out to be.
The human body needs cholesterol to make hormones, for cushioning and protection. Without cholesterol we would have no hormones, which are the spark plugs in the system and as a result all sort of health problems can arise.
What we need to be asking instead is what type of cholesterol is prominent in the system and what affect it is having.
The liver is in charge of making cholesterol. Again another job our busy “manager” in the body has to deal with.
Most people will have heard of LDL levels, the supposedly bad type of cholesterol compared to HDL, the supposedly healthy type
When under stress or when the body senses it is dehydrated, the liver will create extra levels of LDL.
In naturopathy we believe the body is always working for you and not against.
Stress causes dehydration
Dehydration causes stress
The liver will create LDL cholesterol to ply around every cell wall to protect water levels in the cell because if those water levels are lost, we can die.
When we are not under stress and are also properly hydrated, the LDL will be removed from the cell wall back to liver to be recycled.
If stress levels remain high in the body, cholesterol levels around the cell wall will continue to build up and compromise the integrity of the cellular movement of electrolytes. This then leads to dis-ease states and a lack of absorption of vital nutrients into the cells due to thickened cell walls full of “protective” levels of cholesterol.
Stress levels have a huge knock on affect on the body. Stress in the form of…
Emotional stress
Environmental stress
And stress from a challenging diet
Stress causes the body to dehydrate, which the liver immediately senses and springs into action to protect us from losing any more water.
So what can be learned from this is to always make sure you are hydrated.
Water is always the first port of call in any stressful situation. Notice how a cup of tea is always offered to someone who is under duress.
Now if statins are offered instead of looking at the overall health situation of a patient what is likely to happen? The statins are going to stop the liver creating any form of cholesterol.
This would be like putting soapy water into the petrol tank and preventing the engine from accessing any oil.
So what happens is the statins then slow down the efficacy of hormone creation and the work of the liver in controlling hydration is compromised. This adds more stress and creates side affects due to the liver not processing vital nutrients properly. One of these is magnesium which is vital to keep the heart beating well into old age.
Another side affect is blindness due to the prevention of the uptake of omega 3 which is vital for eye health due to a lack of cholesterol present.
Cholesterol is finely balanced by the presence of water and essential fats in the body. This sends a signal that you are hydrated. Oil and water work together to hydrate you.
When we are able to look at cholesterol this way and understand how it is better to manage levels by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day, consuming plenty of omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) and reducing our stress levels as much as we can, then we will have more of a guarantee of prolonged health rather than risking popping a pill each day that may lead to more dis-ease symptoms being created.
There are 60 varieties of cholesterol. 1/3 lubricate the body, another 1/3 give you energy, another 1/3 binds to toxins. They are a vital part of the system and don’t need fiddling with except when too much is created to ply around cell walls as a protective mechanism against cells losing water. Hydrate properly and the liver will remove the excess to be used for other vital processes.
Cholesterol is a vital tool and necessary and not to be demonised.
Big pharma changes the story every decade around them…So now we have good cholesterol and bad. Actually they are all good.
The scientist who wrote the book The Cholesterol Myth spent his whole life studying cholesterol and came to this same conclusion.
But money needs to made. So a story is created linking cholesterol to heart attacks. Tests are given, the “anti dote” is created and doctors are paid to give out statins like smarties.
You are tested and given a number. “Oh, your cholesterol is at 8”. I ask my clients to think about what that means. Exactly! What does it mean?
You can take a test and get a result. An hour later drink some water and get a completely different result.
Where is that cholesterol in your blood going? Is it going to help lubricate or is it on its way to bind to a toxin. This is why testing can be useless.
Cholesterol and fats are not the cause of heart disease…it is actually sugar with acidifies the system damaging arterial walls and plaque is created as a result to repair the body.

By the way… EFAs help create serotonin, the happy hormone. Omega 3 is essentially nature’s Prozac. So this helps to work to manage stress.
If your mind is happier then everything else falls into place.
Reduce stress on all levels and the body can heal ♥
